Chlortetracycline (CTC), a representative tetracycline antibiotic with environmental persistence, can enter aquatic environments through hospital effluents, pharmaceutical wastewater, livestock-related discharges, and other antibiotic-containing wastewaters, thereby posing ecological risks associated with antibiotic residues and resistance dissemination. In this study, Bi@BiOCl/TiO2 heterostructured photocatalysts were prepared through a coupled sol-gel/precipitation route and evaluated for visible-light-driven CTC removal. Structural, morphological, optical, photoluminescence, electron paramagnetic resonance, photoelectrochemical, and molecular reactivity analyses were integrated to clarify the relationships among catalyst structure, charge-carrier behavior, reactive species formation, and CTC transformation. Coupling Bi@BiOCl with TiO2 broadened visible-light absorption and promoted interfacial charge separation, which contributed to enhanced photocatalytic activity. Response surface methodology based on a Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the Bi/Ti molar ratio, catalyst dosage, and initial CTC concentration. Under the optimized conditions, the experimental CTC removal efficiency reached 91.69%, in close agreement with the predicted value of 91.81%. Radical trapping and EPR measurements indicated that photogenerated holes, superoxide radicals, and hydroxyl radicals all participated in CTC degradation, with holes serving as the dominant oxidative species. Fukui function, dual descriptor, and Laplace bond order analyses further indicated that electron-rich conjugated/hydroxylated regions, labile C-O and C-Cl bonds, and electron-deficient side-chain groups are key molecular sites for oxidative transformation. These findings provide mechanistic and practical guidance for visible-light-driven treatment of antibiotic-contaminated water.
